During his military services at the department of plastic surgery dr. Frank Niessen became interested in keloid formation. Lots of patients from Indonesia tried to find help for this unsolved, and during those days seemingly curable, problem. He now knows better.
Following his services he started his PhD on hypertrophic scar formation and started his education to become plastic surgeon in 1997. In 1999 he finished his PhD and became plastic surgeon in Groningen the Netherlands in 2003. An European Board Certified Plpastic Surgeon in 2004.
In 2006 he moved to the Free University Medical Center in Amsterdam to start a research network on excessive scarring combined with a ScarClinic were patients from all over the Netherlands come for scar treatment and research. Also he developed his career in cleft lip and esthetic surgery with research on lipofilling, ASIA and capsular contraction around breast implants.
Scarless healing is his mission.
